New waste transfer station construction begins

Dropping rubbish and recycling at the Tip will soon be easier and safer with the construction of a new 20 bay transfer station at the Meru Waste Facility slated to begin in early May 2023.

91视频 Mayor Shane Van Styn said the new facility being built to the south of the existing transfer station will meet the growing needs of the community.

“The Tip is visited nearly 9,000 times every month and this number is steadily increasing,” he said.

“The new transfer station will provide more opportunities for our community to safely separate their waste, which will reduce cross-contamination, and enable more recyclable materials than ever before to be collected and processed for reuse.

“The expected increase in waste recovery will generate economic returns for the City while extending the life of the landfill disposal cell.”

The project also includes upgrades to the electrical system and data infrastructure which will significantly reduce the down time caused by power and telecommunications outages at the site.

Local contractor Crothers Construction will be undertaking the works.

The estimated date of completion is December 2023.

The $7.36 million project is joint funded with the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund contributing $1.13 million and the City the remaining $6.23 million.

During construction, temporary drop off locations for residential waste will be in use.
